Pinot Gris is a good choice as a wine to go with food as it has fruit weight, soft acid and usually some residual sugar to make it a wine that matches many dishes and occasions. The King’s Thorn Pinot Gris is from the Marisco vineyards near Waihopai River in New Zealand’s Marlborough region and have ripened to produce a rich white that has just over 6 grams of sugar to flesh out the curves in the palate.
Ripe fresh pear and stonefruit take on a cinnamon coated cashew nut character thanks to some partial oak fermentation. This oak has also added some weight to make this a fuller bodied, soft mouthful that finishes with a slight firmness and a spicy, nutty savouriness.
Being such a ripe Pinot Gris, there is a lick of alcohol on the back of the mouth that enhances the perfume and lends itself to requiring food. Enjoy this wine with a roast chicken or turkey dinner with all the trimmings or a spiced Chinese or Thai dish.
