Late Bottled Vintage port is made to be immediately approachable and oh! so drinkable from release. Unlike Vintage Port, it’s better known and more prestigious and commensurately expensive version which gets better with many years of cellaring. Like vintage port, LBV also makes a good foil for the likes of crumbly Cheddar, the saltiness of Stilton, and deliciously creamy chocolate truffles. You might find it easier to pick up around Christmas as it is a traditional accompaniment to the seasonal fare. However, if you store a bottle or two unopened, carefully laying down in a cool dark spot, you can enjoy it any time of the year.
Although it is sweet, it is in no way cloying and there is a warming, fiery bite of alcohol which also gives the floral, raspberry and pepper notes a lift. It leaves an impression of fullness for a medium bodied port, with an even balance and a long chocolate coated liquorice length. A good alternative for an after dinner tipple whatever the weather outside, and you will find it amiable company for any occasion .… and not just at Christmas.
